AN/SQQ-89(V) Undersea Warfare / Anti-Submarine Warfare Combat System

Last updated: 20 Sep 2021

Description
The AN/SQQ-89(V) Surface Ship Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Combat System provides integrated Undersea Warfare (USW) combat management, fire control, command and control, and onboard training to enable surface combatants to support engagement of USW targets in both open ocean and littoral environments. The AN/SQQ-89(V) provides surface warships with a seamlessly integrated USW/ASW detection, localization, classification and targeting capability. The system presents an integrated picture of the acoustic tactical situation by receiving, combining and processing active and passive sonar sensor data from a variety of hull-mounted arrays, towed arrays, and sonobuoys. In addition to active and passive detection, the system provides a full range of USW functions: underwater fire control, onboard training capability, a highly-evolved display subsystem, and integration with the Light Airborne Multi-Purpose System (LAMPS MK III and Block II Upgrade) helicopter for sonobuoy signal processing. The system has been deployed on Oliver Hazard Perry (FFG 7) class frigates (all currently in foreign naval service), Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) class destroyers, and Ticonderoga (CG 47) class cruisers, and will be deployed on the future Guided Missile Frigate (FFG(X)) class. When installed on Aegis equipped destroyers and cruisers, the AN/SQQ-89(V) is integrated with the Aegis Combat System. It is the technological foundation for the AN/SQQ-90 system aboard Zumwalt (DDG 1000) class destroyers, and the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) ASW Mission Package, as well as the basis of several Foreign Military Sales (FMS) sonar system packages.

The AN/SQQ-89A(V)15 program brings the newest production variants of the AN/SQQ-89(V) system to the Fleet in an ongoing multi-year back-fit effort to upgrade installed legacy USW systems on destroyers and select cruisers. The AN/SQQ-89A(V)15 system variants are developed using a best of breed build-test-build process, ensuring cost effectiveness through commonality with submarine and surveillance USW systems. The system incorporates hull-mounted sonar (AN/SQS-53C), wideband omni-directional receivers supporting acoustic intercept, and the Multi-Function Towed Array (MFTA), also integrated with an acoustic intercept capability. It greatly expands sensor performance by building on Open Architecture Level 3 Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) processing. The AN/SQQ-89A(V)15 also incorporates expanded active processing capability with the integration of Echo Tracker Classifier (ETC) for both the hull sensor and MFTA.

Forty-six destroyers and cruisers (43 DDGs and 3 CGs) have received AN/SQQ-89A(V)15 back-fits as of 04 December 2018.

Background
The AN/SQQ-89(V) series is the first integrated surface ship USW/ASW combat system. It has a continuing development program, using an open system architecture to incrementally modernize the existing systems by providing contact fusion capabilities, improved data processing performance, and classification improvements. The open system architecture developed into the AN/SQQ-89(V) enables further affordable performance growth to meet emerging Fleet requirements.

The Scaled Improved Sonar System (SIPS) took selected functions from the AN/SQQ-89A(V)15 while it was undergoing its initial system development and added them, as an adjunct system, to legacy AN/SQQ-89(V) systems to provide access to the most current ASW performance then available while the A(V)15 ramped up to its initial production.
