AN/USQ-T46 Battle Force Tactical Training (BFTT)

The BFTT family of systems (BFTT, BFTT Electronic Warfare Trainer (BEWT), Training Communications Sub-System (TCSS) and the Trainer Simulator Stimulator System (TSSS)) provides coordinated stimulation/simulation of shipboard combat systems to facilitate combat systems team training providing the capability to conduct realistic joint warfare training across the spectrum of armed conflict and conduct realistic unit level team training in all primary warfare areas.

BFTT accomplishes this by establishing a synthetic environment in which a tactical scenario is run. Combat system elements receive information from BFTT to stimulate shipboard tactical equipment, resulting in effective coordinated team training even while in-port. BFTT's ability to simulate friendly, neutral or enemy forces such as aircraft/ships/submarines/weapons allows for robust scenario development accurately reflecting the wide range of tactical proficiency levels as a ship and battle group traverse the deployment training cycle.

In addition to this capability to conduct single ship organic training, BFTT when networked with other units through the Navy Continuous Training Environment (NCTE), allows for multiple ships to participate in coordinated distributed training events. More than 130 U.S. Navy warships, including CVN, CG, DDG, LHA, LHD, LPD and LSD class ships have the BFTT system.

BFTT is undergoing an incremental improvement program labeled "BFTT modernization" to improve sustainability, update the underlying technology and improve training fidelity.

The next generation of BFTT is called the advanced training domain (ATD), which integrates the training capability within the Combat System Technical Insertion 2016 (TI-16) hardware and display infrastructure. Core ATD hardware footprint will be down to a single AN/USQ-T52 rack, vice 3, which consists of training unique hardware and software, where most of the processing will be accomplished within the combat systems TI processors. ATD is being developed as modular reusable common components, which will eliminate duplicative functionality, standardize system and user interfaces, and will provide enhanced simulation models by integrating Navy Continuous Training Environment (NCTE) Joint Semi-Automated Forces (JSAF) as the scenario generation tool.
