SAN DIEGO Feb. 14, 2024) An MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter from the “Wildcards” of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 23 simulates recovering personnel during maritime recovery training in San Diego Bay, Feb. 14, 2024. Sailors attached to amphibious transport dock ship USS San Diego (LPD 22), Explosive Ordnance Disposal Expeditionary Support Unit 1 and Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 23 “Wildcards” trained alongside NASA ahead of Underway Recovery Test 11. In preparation for NASA’s Artemis II crewed mission, which will send four astronauts in Orion beyond the Moon, NASA and the Department of Defense will conduct a series of tests to demonstrate and evaluate the processes, procedures and hardware used in recovery operations for crewed lunar missions. VANCOUVER ISLAND, Canada (Feb. 14, 2024) Torpedo recovery boat TWR-8 participates in range operations in the Strait of Georgia in an area known as "Whiskey Golf,” Feb. 14, 2024. The range area is operated by Canadian Forces Maritime Experimental and Test Ranges, a joint Canadian-US test facility situated on the east side of Vancouver Island. The test range is several hundred meters deep, several dozen kilometers long and several kilometers wide over a seabed composed of soft mud and free of underwater obstacles. The facility employs a 3D sonar tracking system for monitoring the performance and position of objects in these waters for real-time tracking.

ATLANTIC OCEAN (Jan. 22, 2024) A larger Multibeam image of the wreck of USS Jacob Jones (DD-61). The U.K. Ministry of Defence's Salvage and Marine Operations (SALMO) unit successfully conducted a survey of the historic WWI wreck of the Tucker-class destroyer USS Jacob Jones (DD-61) in the Atlantic Ocean on Jan. 22, 2024. The operation, carried out at the behest of Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) and with pivotal support from the U.S. Embassy in London, led to the recovery of the ship's bell. NHHC, located at the Washington Navy Yard, is responsible for preserving, analyzing, and disseminating U.S. naval history and heritage.
