U.S. Air Force Gen. John E. Hyten (center), commander of U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), addresses students and discusses USSTRATCOM’s missions and 21st century deterrence during his visit to the U.S. Naval War College (NWC) in Newport, R.I., April 14, 2017. While there, Hyten also toured campus facilities and met with faculty and staff. NWC aims to develop strategic and operational leaders, help the Chief of Naval Operations define the future Navy, strengthen maritime security cooperation and support combat readiness. Since the first class of nine students met in October 1884, more than 24,000 U.S. military and international officers, as well as hundreds of senior federal service civilian executives, have graduated from NWC. One of nine Department of Defense unified combatant commands, USSTRATCOM has global strategic missions assigned through the Unified Command Plan that include strategic deterrence, space operations, cyberspace operations, joint electronic warfare, global strike, missile defense, intelligence, and analysis and targeting.
