180802-N-IK959-4788 GREAT LAKES, Ill. (Aug. 2, 2018) U. S. Navy Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class Marcus Murphy (left), an instructor in the USS Marlinspike Seamanship Trainer at Recruit Training Command (RTC), observes Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) midshipman candidates simulate getting a ship underway. More than 65 young men and women entering their freshman year of the NROTC program participated in a two-week pilot program designed to provide standardized entry-level militarization and prepare new NROTC midshipmen with a common training orientation. USS Marlinspike was used as part of their final evaluation, during which they had to complete several tasks in different RTC training facilities in a timely manner, working as a team. The indoctrination serves as a standard training launch point for the future naval and Marine Corps officers, and for the development of their character and professional competence.
