180919-N-AO674-0120 ATLANTIC OCEAN (Sept. 19, 2018) Air Force Gen. Terrence J. O'Shaughnessy, commander of U.S. Northern Command (NORTHCOM), speaks to Sailors and Marines utilizing the amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge's (LHD 3) announcement system. Kearsarge is currently positioned off the coast of North Carolina as part of the Department of Defense-wide response to areas affected by Hurricane Florence. While aboard Kearsarge, O'Shaughnessy spoke to the crew and embarked Marines, toured the ship, and met with the leadership of Expeditionary Strike Group 2 and Amphibious Squadron 6. Under the direction of U.S. NORTHCOM, Kearsarge, the amphibious transport dock ship USS Arlington (LPD 24), and embarked elements of the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit were deployed ahead of the hurricane and followed the storm in order to provide Defense Support of Civil Authorities, if requested.
