160916-N-YB832-486 PHILIPPINE SEA (Sept. 16, 2016) The forward MK15 Phalanx Close-in Weapons System (CIWS) is fired during live-fire exercise aboard the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Curtis Wilbur (DDG 54) during Valiant Shield 2016. Valiant Shield is a biennial, U.S.-only, field training exercise with a focus on integration of joint training among U.S. forces. This is the sixth exercise in the Valiant Shield series that began in 2006. Curtis Wilbur is on patrol in the Philippine Sea with the Bonhomme Richard Strike Group to support security and stability in the Indo-Asia Pacific region.
