161012-M-MK762-008 HAITI (Oct. 12, 2016) Hatian nationals watch as Marines with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit unload 50 kg bags of rice at a remote village in the Republic of Haiti. Eleven Marines left USS Mesa Verde (LPD 19) and travelled to Haiti International Airport where they took on 7,500 lbs. of humanitarian relief supplies, then delivered the aid from a CH-53E Super Stallion. This and other assets with the 24th MEU provide heavy-lift capabilities to Task Force Matthew, and US Southern Command, which responded with a coordinated initial military assistance response to the government of Haiti’s request for aid following Hurricane Matthew, a Category IV storm, which hit the area causing widespread destruction.
