Conway at the Basilica of Immaculate Conception in Waterbury, Conn. Monsignor Bevins, a retired Navy Captain and former senior rector at the Basilica, was accepting the medal on behalf of Conway. Conway was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his heroic efforts aboard the USS Indianapolis (CA 35) when it was attacked and sunk by an enemy submarine in 1945.
