During a visit aboard the USS Observation Island (EAG 154), President John F. Kennedy witnesses the successful launch of an unarmed Polaris A2 missile from the LAFAYETTE Class submarine USS Andrew Jackson (SSBN 619) off the coast of Florida. J. Galantin. Today, the Sea-Based Strategic Deterrence mission continues. The current generation of submarine launched ballistic missile – the Trident II D5 - along with the Intercontinental ballistic missile and nuclear capable bombers create the nation’s strategic nuclear deterrence capability. The triad of capabilities – SLBMs, ICBMs and nuclear capable bombers – are each undergoing modernization to ensure our nation’s ability to serve as the backbone of our nation’s security.
