Severn Stevens, commanding officer of the amphibious transport dock ship USS Green Bay (LPD 20), receives a gift from traditional Indonesian performers during a welcome ceremony for exercise Super Garuda Shield 23 in Surabaya, Indonesia, Aug. 30, 2023. The ceremony contained traditional Indonesian performers and allowed U.S. Navy Sailors and U.S. Marines, with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, to exchange gifts with members from the Indonesia National Armed Forces. Super Garuda Shield 23 (SGS23) is an annual exercise that has significantly grown in scope and size since 2009. SGS23 is the second consecutive time this exercise has grown into a combined and joint event, highlighting the six participating and 12 observing nations' commitment to partnership and a free and open Indo-Pacific.
