KITTERY, Maine (Mar. 19, 2024) – Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Energy, Installations, and Environment and Chief Sustainability Officer, the Honorable Meredith Berger, pictured, makes remarks as the keynote speaker at a celebration event held at the Rice Public Library to announce Portsmouth Naval Shipyard’s (PNSY) removal from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Superfund National Priorities List (NPL). Other speakers included: Regional Administrator, U.S. EPA, Dr. David Cash; Commissioner, Maine Department of Environmental Protection, Ms. Melanie Loyzim; Community Co-Chair, Restoration Advisory Board, Mr. Doug Bogen; and Shipyard Commander, Capt. Michael Oberdorf. In 1994, PNSY was placed on the Superfund NPL based on environmental investigations that began in 1983. Through the Navy’s Environmental Restoration (ER) Program, PNSY implemented all appropriate response actions for the ER sites. On Feb. 16, 2024, PNSY was officially delisted from the NPL. The delisting was accomplished through accelerated environmental cleanup using green remediation and innovative technology in collaboration with regulatory partners and stakeholders to ensure the protection of human health and the environment.
