Lt. Susan Ahn Cuddy joined the Navy in 1942 after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. She became the first woman Asian American to serve in the Navy and the first woman gunnery officer. During World War II, she served as an instructor in both combat air tactics and the use of the .50 caliber machine gun. She subsequently worked at office of naval intelligence as a code breaker and at the National Security Agency during the Cold War.
