Chief Yeoman Edna Young became the first enlisted woman, and also the first black enlisted woman, to be sworn into the regular Navy (instead of the WAVES or Women’s Naval Reserve) in 1948. She later became the first black woman promoted to chief petty officer. She retired from the Navy as a chief.
