A 1994 Naval Academy graduate, Capt. Amy Bauernschmidt became the first woman commanding officer of a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier when she took command of USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) in 2021. Bauernschmidt was also the first woman to serve as the executive officer of an aircraft carrier, a position she held from 2016 to 2019.
