Capt. Valerie Carpenter was part of the first group of women assigned to sea duty. In 1993, she reported to the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) as the first woman department head of the combat systems department. She was also one of the first five women officers to report for duty aboard USS Puget Sound (AD 38). She supported Operations Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom and retired after 28 years of service.
