Capt. Winifred Collins was amongst the first officers accepted as a WAVES officer during World War II, she was the second woman sworn into the U.S. Navy, and was the only woman line captain at the end of her career. Her final assignment was as the assistant chief of personnel for women from 1957-1962. Notably, she was one of the first women to receive Harvard Business School Training, which she studied at Radcliffe College from 1937-1938. The annual Navy League Sea Service Awards for Women are named in her honor.
