Lt. Cmdr. Amber Cowan is the first woman to serve as the executive officer of a submarine. Cowan, who joined the Navy in 2010, made history when she assumed this leadership position on the ballistic-missile submarine USS Kentucky (SSBN 737), based out of Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor. She has previously served on USS Maine (SSBN 741) as the propulsion assistant; USS Texas (SSN 775) as the engineering officer; and at U.S. Submarine Forces Pacific Fleet, as the force radiological controls officer.
