Capt. Janet Days is the first black woman commanding officer of the world’s largest naval base, Naval Station Norfolk (2023). She previously served as the first black woman executive officer as well. Days also served as the executive officer and commanding officer of USS McFaul (DDG 74). She has also served as the executive officer of Surface Warfare School (SWOS) Command in Newport, Rhode Island, and as the director of maritime warfare at SWOS, where she was responsible for the training and development of all surface warfare department heads.
