Alma Ellis

Capt. Alma Ellis enlisted in the Navy in 1943. She was stationed in Boston; Washington; Germany; and France. In 1968, she was among the first group of women to be promoted to captain by the Navy. Ellis became the officer-in-charge of the Navy’s Women Officer’s School in Newport, Rhode Island, and in 1970, was appointed as the first woman line officer assigned to the Naval Academy as director of the U.S. Naval Museum. She retired in 1973.
