On April 9, 2021, Capt. Franca Jones took the helm of the Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) No. 6 in Lima, Peru. In doing so, she became the first woman commanding officer at NAMRU 6 as well as the first woman microbiologist to serve as commanding officer of a Navy research command. Capt. Jones has served across the government at the White House, Pentagon, and deployed to Afghanistan. The mother of a child with Down syndrome, she has mentored and inspired Navy families with special needs children to stay in the Navy. A certified personal trainer and swim coach, she has completed four ironman triathlons and volunteers with the Maryland Special Olympics as a strength and conditioning coach.
