Capt. Roberta McIntyre was the first woman to qualify as a surface warfare officer in 1980. She was also one of the first women to report for shipboard duty, when she reported to the submarine tender USS Dixon (AS 37). Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Hayward personally called her to congratulate her on becoming the first woman SWO. Her next assignment was at the Fleet Training Group in San Diego, where she became the first woman navigation training officers.
