Capt. Bernadette McKay became the first woman to serve as director of administrative services at Naval Submarine Medical Center, New London. She is not only the first woman, but also the first nurse corps officer to hold the position. She also served as the assistant for nursing to the medical inspector general. McKay retired from the Navy in 1986 after more than 30 years of service.
