Cmdr. Bernice Nordstrom paved the way for women in the medical corps of the U.S. Navy. In 1952, she was one of five women physicians on active duty in the U.S. Navy at the time and she was one of the first woman physicians to serve aboard a ship. Her first ship was Consolation (AH 15) out of the Republic of Korea.
