Cmdr. R. Corey Cherrett relieved Cmdr. Jillene Bushnell as commanding officer of the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) during a ceremony Oct. 5th, at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii.
Bushnell led the center since August 2016. She previously served as OPNAV N2N6 staff E1 oceanography capabilities officer and as the OPNAV N2N6F executive assistant to the director, Warfare Integration.
"I am proud of the work accomplished by this incredible team over the past two years. I will miss the professionalism and ohana at the command," said Bushnell. "The team is primed and ready to achieve greatness under CO Cherrett, as they press forward with the integration of the NOAA AWIPS system."
Bushnell was a U.S. Naval Academy graduate in 1998, and flew the S-3B Viking and F/A-18E/F Super Hornet for over 1,500 hours prior to transferring to the meteorology and oceanography community in 2007. Under her command, JTWC provided over 2,300 forecasts for 135 tropical cyclones, over 22,000 aviation weather products, and disseminated tsunami products for 50 earthquake events. Her next assignment will be at the OPNAV N2/N6 staff.
“My family and I are very excited to join such a professional and reputable team here in Hawaii,” said Cherrett. “My first impression of the command has been very impressive. It speaks loudly to the respect and leadership ingrained in the JTWC culture.”
Cherrett, a graduate of the University of Washington, commissioned through Officer Candidate School in 2001. He has served in the METOC community both ashore and afloat, completing his most recent tour as fleet oceanographer for U.S. 6th Fleet based in Italy. He has earned a M.S. in Meteorology and Physical Oceanography, as well as a Ph.D. in Meteorology, from the Naval Postgraduate School.
JTWC (Task Element 80.7.7.1) is jointly staffed by U.S. Navy and Air Force personnel and falls under the operational control of Commander, Task Group 80.7/Commander, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command via Fleet Weather Center San Diego (Task Unit 80.7.7). U.S. Air Force personnel are administratively assigned to the 17th Operational Weather Squadron, a subordinate squadron of the 1st Weather Group and the 557th Weather Wing.
JTWC provides tropical cyclone reconnaissance, forecast, warning and decision support services for operational advantage to U.S. government agencies operating in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Navy personnel at JTWC also provide tsunami advisory information and recommendations to shore installations and units, as well as impact forecasts for U.S. Pacific Fleet’s airborne intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance and decision support services to U.S. Pacific Command and its subordinate commands.
