04 May 2018

From R. Holland, Training Support Center Hampton Roads Public Affairs

For some Sailors, juggling a family and career often find there's not enough time in the day for their daily routine, let alone volunteering, but for Navy Counselor 1st Class Douglas 'Alex' Edmonston helping people comes naturally.
For some Sailors, juggling a family and career often find there's not enough time in the day for their daily routine, let alone volunteering, but for Navy Counselor 1st Class Douglas 'Alex' Edmonston helping people comes naturally.

As a husband and father of three, his plate is plenty full-and yet he still finds the time to give back to the community. For the past two years Edmonston has been volunteering at the NAS Oceana (NASO) Child Youth Program (CYP), led by Adam D'Amico, NASO Morale Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Youth Sports Fitness Coordinator.

Every two weeks, Edmonston along with volunteers from the NAS Oceana Dam Neck Annex Training Support Center Hampton Roads (TSCHR) student hold company volunteer for the CYP.

Edmonston coaches soccer, guides the student volunteers on what needs to be done from mowing the soccer and baseball field (s), putting up fences, lining the fields, to cleaning the bathrooms.

"We couldn't run this program, without Alex and TSC," said D'Amico. "He's always looking ahead to see how he can help."

"I had fun working outside and it made me feel good knowing that I'm helping the kids," said FCSN Nickolas Jordan, TSCHR Dam Neck hold company.

"Working with CYP has been very rewarding, this is my second year volunteering and it's extremely fulfilling to see the kids so passionate about playing sports," said Edmonston. "My wife, Erica is also involved, while busy with her master's degree, she put the players' names on their soccer jerseys and customized their water bottles."

"If you've never checked out the CYP Sports Center, you're missing out," said Edmonston. "They've batting cages, treadmills, all sorts of activities and work out equipment parents can do with their kids. Adam D'Amico is irreplaceable; he ensures all the CYP activities are the absolute best!"
