A Carrier Strike Group FOUR Sailor is hoping to qualify for the All-Navy Golf Team for her second time in as many years during a tournament at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California July 15-21.

Information Systems Technician 2nd Class Magdelana Ramirez will be competing against 19 other Sailors trying to qualify for the All-Navy Golf team. If she makes the team she will compete at the U.S. Armed Forces Tournament July 22-26.

"I'm pretty confident going into the tournament this year, because I have done it before," said Ramirez. "I'm also really excited because of the comradery that the tournament provides and the ability to see people I haven't seen in two years."

In 2016, Ramirez was not only selected for the All-Navy team but also joined the U.S. Armed Forces Team, bringing home a bronze medal from the 10th Military World Championship Golf Tournament in Amsterdam.

"I'm really glad that I have command support for this as it gives me the ability to pursue something that I am passionate about and still have the peace of mind that the mission is being completed because of the excellent work group I have around me," said Ramirez.

Ramirez, a native of Albuquerque, New Mexico learned to play golf with her father and has played the sport for 17 years. After winning two state championships in high school she attended New Mexico State University on a full athletic scholarship, winning three Mountain West Conference titles with the Aggies. A former school teacher, she also teaches golf to adults and children.

"Right now I'm volunteering for the First Tee program; I just like to stay in the game. I have been blessed to have done a lot of things with golf. I want to be able to help other people."

Looking ahead, Ramirez looks to improve her game. She plays locally at Sewell's Point Golf Course in Norfolk and Eagle Haven Golf Course on Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story and is always looking for more opportunities to compete.
