Naval Supply Systems Command Fleet Logistics Center (NAVSUP FLC) Norfolk hosted a group of 21 contracting interns from throughout the NAVSUP enterprise July 17 through 19.

According to Cheryl Somers, intern and training coordinator for the contracting department (code 200), the group was from Mechanicsburg, Penn., Philadelphia, Groton, Conn. and Norfolk.

"This was my first year as the Intern Coordinator for code 200 and it was truly my pleasure to be able to plan and coordinate this event," she added. "I believe this is very valuable to the contracting personnel as this allows them a glimpse of their customer's needs."

Part of their education on customer needs was up close, they visited USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) and visited the Joint Staff J6 Facility in Suffolk, Virginia, where they were shown the facilities where they plan, train and facilitate operations and battle labs for cyber security, communications and advanced planning for command & control.

Somers added that their three-day visit to Norfolk was far more than just tours, they also participated in leadership training and met with key leaders at NAVSUP FLC Norfolk. The visit is a small portion of their overall internship period, which lasts from three to five years.

"This also gives us a chance to get to know the interns from distant locations and connect with them," she added. "It allows the interns in Norfolk a chance to network with their peers from the FLC regional sites and understand the diversity of our customer base and mission."
