In yet another effort to simplify processes, an enterprising officer at Commander, Navy Reserve Forces Command has created a program entitled AUTONAM to ease an award writer through drafting an award citation and corresponding 1650. Additionally, the award portal automates the formatting saving indispensable time.

Lt. Cmdr. Ernest Jessop, N7 Surface Training, MPFUB, RIMA and 3M officer, had the idea after observing award packages that lacked consistent formatting and were not in keeping with the local awards instruction. He recognized that Microsoft SharePoint had the capability to automate document creation and started the project to assist members across the Reserve force.

The AUTONAM program is conveniently located on the MyNRH SharePoint portal at:
http://private.navyreserve.navy.mil/cnrfc/N-Codes/N7/award_writer/

The portal begins by taking the user through a series of questions which result in the automated creation of an award write-up and 1650. Generated documents are customizable, since commands may have criteria for awards that differ from CNRFC templates. Specific capabilities include:

* User friendly interface using form entry
* Automated generation of awards as Microsoft Word files that appear in a personal view. Currently AUTONAM generates Navy Commendation and Achievement medals. Additional awards will be added to the inventory in future updates.
* Ability to access all of your created awards, by using the My Awards section, accessible by following the link on the top horizontal menu.

Jessop said next he plans to tackle adding more awards to the inventory as well as enable civilian awards. With a newer and improved SharePoint migration on the horizon, he plans to further leverage the SharePoint resources to simplify how we conduct business in the Navy Reserve.
