Adm. James G. Foggo III, commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa and commander, Allied Joint Force Command Naples, visited Her Majesty's Naval Base (HMNB) Clyde in Faslane, Scotland, Aug. 8, 2018.
HMNB Clyde, one of three bases in the U.K. used by the Royal Navy, is the home to the of Royal Navy’s ballistic submarine fleet, and has been supporting U.S. Navy submarine and surface forces for many decades.
During his visit, Foggo met with Royal Navy Rear Adm. John Weale, Flag Officer Scotland and Northern Ireland, Assistant Chief of Naval Staff Submarines and Rear Admiral Submarines, to discuss operations, exercises, and fleet training.
“By training and operating with our Royal Navy allies across the full spectrum of naval warfare we are building and maintaining credible, capable forces,” Foggo said during his visit to the base. “We are stronger together, and know that if the U.K. and U.S. are called upon to fight alongside each other we will both be ready.”
During the visit Foggo took the opportunity to tour Royal Navy submarines and stopped by the base’s training facility where Flag Officer Sea Training was being held.
“We are greatly appreciative of the support the U.K. provides to our naval forces in venues such as Flag Officer Sea Training, exercise Joint Warrior and exercise Formidable Shield,” said Foggo. “These joint training opportunities ensure our ships, submarines, and aircraft are ready to execute any mission across the European theater and around the globe.”
Foggo highlighted the strong naval partnership the U.S. and U.K. enjoys, a partnership strengthened through information sharing, combined operations, and a mutual commitment to regional stability and security.
“I had a wonderful visit to HMNB Clyde and I appreciate the hospitality of Rear Adm. Weale and the crews of the attack submarine and ballistic submarine which I toured today," said Foggo. “I look forward to continuing to work hand-in-hand with the Royal Navy. I always enjoy seeing the warships from our two navies operate together, the White Ensign alongside our stars and stripes.”
