Four electronics technician students and one instructor graduated from the joint Army and Navy Satellite Communication (SATCOM) Special Maintenance Course at the Center for Information Warfare Training (CIWT) Detachment Fort Gordon, Aug. 3.
Electronics Technician 2nd Class Tymarchio Etheridge became the detachment’s newest SATCOM instructor after graduating with class 010-18.
"Coming from the ship and working the controlling station helped me to put the whole picture together," said Etheridge. "Using both the knowledge gained in this course and my prior experience will enable me to help students in a much broader capacity."
Etheridge reported to the detachment late last year for instructor duty and was enrolled in the SATCOM Special Maintenance Technician Course, Jan. 22. All staff members must pass the course of instruction they will be teaching with a grade point average of 90 percent or better as part of the instructor qualification process. Because of the six-month duration of the course, the graduation ceremony is a momentous occasion which marks a significant accomplishment for both students and instructors alike.
The SATCOM Special Maintenance course consists of 1,015 hours of instruction and provides students with the skills necessary to perform organizational maintenance on DCSC AN/GSC-52 (V) State-of-the-Art Medium Terminal (SAMT) satellite communications equipment, DSCS GSC-39, FSC-78 or FLTSATCOM FSC-79 satellite ground terminal equipment and USC-28(V) satellite communication set. Students are awarded the V90A Navy Enlisted Classification code upon successful completion of the course.
