Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Far East awarded a $14 million contract, Jan. 12, to repair bachelor enlisted quarters (BEQ) onboard Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Futenma, Okinawa, Japan.

"MCAS Futenma's four-story BEQ 226 is in critical need of renovation and upgrade. The existing facility fails to meet current safety and fire codes and mechanical systems require excessive shop maintenance support," said Lt. Cmdr. Luke Cowley, Facilities Engineering and Acquisition Division director at Camp Butler, Okinawa. "Award of this whole building renovation effort will provide our Marines with an updated, comfortable and safe facility, improving morale and ensuring safe billeting of our Marine forces such that they are able to more fully execute their mission. This project is crucial to the continued success of the primary mission of MCAS Futenma which is to provide, maintain and operate airfield facilities and services for the safe and efficient operational support of both 1st Marine Aircraft Wing and transient aircraft."

Work will include remodeling lounge areas so that each building will have an exercise area, kitchenette, entertainment room and study room. All doors and windows will be replaced. Bathrooms will be completely upgraded, including new toilets, bathtubs, cabinets and plumbing fixtures. Upgrades will make the building more energy efficient, safe, secure, and better able to accommodate wounded warrior and handicap accessibility.

The $13,742,124 contract was awarded to NIPPO Corporation. Work is scheduled for completion in Summer 2019.
