A local elementary school in Rota, Spain was filled with educational fun and a whole lot of water when Naval Station Rota's Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES) and Spanish personnel arrived June 20.

Firefighters "Nacho" Del Rio and Adrian Patino Bernal drove a reserve supply tanker to Ponce de Leon School just outside the Rota gate to spend the afternoon with some of the school's students. Firefighters demonstrated basic fire prevention and escape, and showed them how to rapidly don firefighting gear in just under two minutes.

"I love visiting the schools to show the kids different fire safety items and then having fun with them and their families," said Nacho. "It's awesome!"

The auditorium was filled with laughter as more than 60 children mimicked firefighters actions of stop, drop and roll and when the student's teachers tried to put on firefighting suits.

After the quick lesson on safety and prevention, everyone proceeded outside where the wet and wild fun was about to go down.

F&ES firefighters were joined by members of the Spanish Proteccin Civil and began showing the children how to properly move when fighting a fire on a hose team. Children began running into the water stream and that's when chaos ensued.

Children doused firefighters with buckets of water and squirt guns. Firefighters gently sprayed the children and faculty and eventually turned on each other, spraying the different hose teams. The water fun went on until the tankers ran out of water and the children had to go back to class.

"This is one of my favorite things about my job," said Nacho. "It's so important to be with the community and show them that we are here for them."

"Our priority when we are there is to teach them and then to keep them happy, make them laugh and make sure they enjoy their time with us," said Bernal, who was on his first school visit. "I can't wait to do this again."

Group photos were taken and gifts exchanged. Each group thanked the other for the wonderful afternoon and then it was back to business as usual, except a bit soggier.
