The "Raptors" of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 71 has a proud history of standing out and leading the way when it comes to operational, tactical, and professional development, establishing itself as the "First and Finest" HSM since its inception Oct. 4, 2007.
The "Raptors" of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 71 has a proud history of standing out and leading the way when it comes to operational, tactical, and professional development, establishing itself as the "First and Finest" HSM since its inception Oct. 4, 2007.

HSM-71 has continued to forge a path for the rest of the community to follow, becoming the first operational MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopter squadron to employ the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System and earning various awards for outstanding achievements in naval aviation. Despite all of these accomplishments, the squadron is most proud of its dedication to keeping its Sailors and officers -- the Raptor family -- safe. In addition to having executed more than 45,000 mishap-free flight hours, HSM-71 has now reached the remarkable milestone of 1,000 DUI-free days.

"This commendable milestone shows the true family effort of Raptors taking care of Raptors," said Command Master Chief Steven Cosgrove. "It is a direct result of the safety culture that has been developed at HSM-71 throughout the years. In 2009, the command established its own version of the 'Arrive Alive' program, requiring every new check-in to receive a Raptor Taxi card, a last-resort option in the event that he or she is unable to secure a ride after drinking alcoholic beverages. Not only does this provide each Sailor with a safety net, it also promotes an awareness of, and opposition to, drinking and driving."

Perhaps most effective, however, is the strong sense of unity and togetherness which defines the all-encompassing culture at HSM-71 -- the idea each and every Sailor is a part of the Raptor family. HSM-71's Commanding Officer, Cmdr. Brian Holmes, places his top priority on the safety and well-being of those entrusted to him.

"We talk all the time about the Raptor family and taking care of one another," Holmes said. "One thousand days DUI-free is a huge accomplishment, as well as a visible sign of what it means to be a Raptor."

To celebrate the occasion, the HSM-71 Junior Enlisted Association hosted a picnic at Naval Air Station North Island, and Holmes granted a 96-hour liberty weekend for the entire squadron.

According to leaders within the chain of command, they frequently emphasize the importance Raptors' need to look out for each other. Whether it is on deployment in the South China Sea, on the job at NAS North Island, or out on liberty with friends or family, the sense of belonging instilled throughout the command by each Sailor ensures HSM-71 continues to be a safe workplace people consider their home away from home.
