Patrol Squadron 16 arrives in Ronneby, Sweden

Patrol Squadron (VP) 16 arrived in Ronneby, Sweden, March 26, to participate in the Swedish-led "WASA III" exercise.
Patrol Squadron (VP) 16 arrived in Ronneby, Sweden, March 26, to participate in the Swedish-led "WASA III" exercise.

"WASA III" is led by the 41st Corvette Squadron of the Swedish Navy and will focus on advanced anti-submarine warfare coordination between Swedish surface forces and United States fixed-wing maritime patrol aircraft operating in Swedish littoral waters. This detachment is led by Cmdr. Miguel Martinez, commanding officer of VP-16.

"The 'War Eagles' are extremely excited to begin our first P-8A deployment to the 6th Fleet area of responsibility with an opportunity to work with the Swedish Navy out of their country," said Martinez. "We look forward to executing a highly successful exercise between our two nations that leads to even greater cooperation in the future."

QUICK FACTS:
- This detachment marks the first time a P-8A Poseidon has operated out of Sweden in an exercise.
- VP-16 is beginning the second P-8A deployment to the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations.
- VP-16 is based out of Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida.
- VP-16 was the first fleet U.S. maritime patrol squadron certified safe for flight to operate the P-8A Poseidon.
- VP-16 is deployed to Naval Air Station Sigonella, Sicily under Commander Task Force 67.
