The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Carney (DDG 64) began Flag Officer Sea Training (FOST) with the British Royal Navy April 10, 2017.

The FOST certification aims to certify NATO ships in advanced warfare areas.

QUICK FACTS:

FOST offers tailored training to meet the specific national requirements of many other navies, air forces and elements of land forces.

FOST's training prepares all types of surface warships, submarines and auxiliaries for peacetime, peace-support, and war-fighting operations. Starting with basic alongside preparatory safety and readiness training, units progress through single threat and multi-threat scenarios.

The first day of FOST consists of a Material Assessment and Safety Check, an inspection to ensure that Carney's crew is qualified and the ship's equipment is safe for use.

The remainder of FOST is a three-week exercise that will cover various training evolutions that are centered around a fabricated story line.

Carney is being assessed by FOST inspectors as well as the U.S. Navy's Afloat Training Group.

USS Carney (DDG 64), forward-deployed to Rota, Spain, is currently conducting its third forward deployed naval force patrol.
