AMMPS, IECUs, NETC2 Tents Provide Energy Conservation for Expeditionary Forces

Since the beginning of the year, Navy Expeditionary Combat Command has saved more than 3,235 gallons of fuel by utilizing the Advanced Medium Mobile Power Systems and Improved Environmental Control Units in their NECC Enterprise Tactical Command Control tent configurations.

Chief Warrant Officer 4 Joseph Wallis, assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Expeditionary Support Unit 2, based at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, discussed the benefits of the NETC2.

EODESU 2 currently has versions one and two of the NETC2 tent configuration in their table of allowance. The tent configurations are provided to expeditionary combat forces deployed worldwide in every combatant theater.

"The internal layer of the tent provides insulation, which in turn provides more energy efficiency," said Wallis, who added the biggest differences between the two variants of tents are the size of each complex. "It can cool the tent by 10-20 degrees in a hot environment, for example."

In addition to keeping the operators cool or warm while forward-deployed the AMMPS, IECUs and the tent liners are all providing energy conservation.

"AMMPS burn a lot less fuel," added Wallis. "As a result you are saving on fuel consumption; that in itself is huge and when applied across the force."

The goal of the Great Green Fleet throughout 2016 is to deploy energy efficient systems and use alternative energy in an operational environment, to demonstrate them as key enablers of combat capability and flexibility. The Navy's energy efficiency initiatives provide expeditionary forces and the rest of the Navy with a combat advantage -- using energy efficiently enables personnel to go farther, stay longer and deliver more firepower. It also provides personnel a force protection advantage -- using energy efficiently takes fuel convoys off the road and reduces the amount of time our ships are tied to oilers, reducing vulnerabilities to Sailors and Marines.

"If we can save more by using various energy conservation measures, we can stretch the fuel on station, expand more life sustainment, and get more of a foothold wherever we are deployed," said Wallis, who added fuel conservation reduces the logistics burden.

NECC is an enduring warfighting force providing sea-to-shore and inland operating environment capabilities across the full range of military operations that is focused on delivering combat effective expeditionary forces ready for worldwide operations now and into the future.
