Los Angeles-class fast attack submarine USS Illinois (SSN 786) held a change of command ceremony in Naval Submarine Base New London's chapel Nov. 18.

Cmdr. Brent Spillner became Springfield's 13th commanding officer after relieving Capt. Roger Meyer.

Meyer addressed those in attendance by saying, "It is a great honor and privilege that I stand before you today -- on one hand, to celebrate a great ship and great crew, and other, to transfer command to Commander Brent Spillner."

Meyer thanked Commander, Submarine Squadron 4 Capt. John McGunnigle for his leadership and support, as well as the Springfield's Chiefs Mess and wardroom.

Both the current and the former commanding officer thanked their families for their support, as well.

Meyer closed his speech with a Springfield tradition by loudly calling out, "No Free Rides!"

The crew responded with a loud, "Everybody rows!"

Spillner told Meyer, "You have passed on to me a crew that is absolutely at the top of their game. I am truly impressed by our crew's capability and dedication, and it is humbling to be appointed to serve with such men."
