A explosive ordnance disposal technician (EOD) will be applying lessons learned over the past 24 years during the 2016 DoD Warrior Games where he will serve as team captain for the Navy athletes competing this year, June 15-21 at West Point, New York.

Chief Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician Ron Condrey, assigned to Navy Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC) will compete in three separate events -- cycling, running, and archery -- while serving as team captain during the upcoming Warrior Games. Navy Wounded Warrior - Safe Harbor is sponsoring and facilitating Team Navy's participation in this year's Wounded Warrior games.

"I look forward to the camaraderie of not just Navy warriors, but DoD-wide and I am proud to represent my community and the Navy," said Condrey, who deployed 13 times during his military career to the Persian Gulf, Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Balkans.

Condrey, who had never previously picked up a bow and arrow, began taking lessons in January and is confident he will excel.

"Archery is just as mental as it is physical," said Condrey. "In fact, archery is similar to shooting -- which I'm very experienced with -- so I plan to apply my shooting principles to this sport."

He will also compete in the 400-meter, 800-meter, and 1600-meter track events, as well as the 30-kilometer cycling event.

"I'm thankful for the opportunity to compete and represent my community, NECC and the Navy," said Condrey, who added during the past two decades he has gained years of experience and mental toughness, which will help him lead his teammates.

During this year's DoD Warrior Games, athletes will participate in eight sporting events, representing teams from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, U.S. Special Operations Command and the United Kingdom (UK) Armed Forces.

"I have worked with every branch of service throughout my career," added Condrey. "While I respect and have camaraderie with the other services, the Warrior Games is a great opportunity to showcase our competitive sides."

The DoD Warrior Games highlight the resiliency and warrior spirit of service members, veterans and their families and caregivers. Adaptive sports and athletic reconditioning activities play a fundamental role in the successful recovery and reintegration of our service members and veterans.

Condrey is dedicated to instill motivation in his teammates as they overcome the challenges they are facing.

"I enjoy motivating people to put forth their best effort, leverage teamwork, and accomplish their goals," said Condrey. "Competing in Warrior Games provides these warriors the opportunity to test their mental and physical abilities."

The Warrior Games were created in 2010 as a way to enhance the recovery and rehabilitation of wounded warriors and to expose them to adaptive sports.
