The Navy officially rolled out a first-of-its-kind Mobile Restaurant Vehicle (MRV), an essential restaurant-on-wheels that will serve fleet Sailors and civilians, during a ribbon cutting ceremony aboard Naval Air Station (NAS) Fallon in Fallon, Nevada, Feb. 9.

The MRV, branded the Take 5ive Mobile Bistro by Navy Region Southwest (NRSW), will employ four culinary specialist Sailors assigned to NAS Fallon's Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) department to prepare fresh, delectable meals from scratch in the vehicle's fully-equipped kitchen for base customers to enjoy.

"This isn't just a food truck; it's a no-kidding restaurant on wheels," said Steve Hammel, NRSW food and beverage director. "Every aspect of its operation was designed with the goal of creating a truly top notch culinary experience for the customer."

Beyond the high-tech galley kitchen, the MRV also boasts an electronic menu board that doubles as a flat screen television for broadcasting sporting events, an advanced stereo system and an awning to provide diners with shade as they enjoy their meals. The mobile bistro offers a full menu of hand-crafted breakfast and lunch entrees--all in line with current Navy nutritional standards--in addition to an array of beverage choices, all at competitive prices.

"A regular food truck, in most cases, offers a basic, static menu of prepackaged and frozen foods," said Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Fleet Logistics Center San Diego Commanding Officer Capt. John Palmer. "This mobile bistro, on the other hand, offers eclectic, gourmet dining options that are freshly prepared, while also providing a unique environment for the customer to relax and enjoy as they dine. When they get back out on that flight line, they'll be refreshed, well nourished and ready to support the mission."

In addition to providing Sailors and civilians with expanded dining options, the MRV has also resulted in the availability of a new line of training for fleet culinary specialists.

"I can tell you that this is an important milestone in achieving Chief of Supply Corps Rear Adm. Jonathan Yuen's vision of expanding opportunities for culinary specialists," Commander, NAVSUP Global Logistics Support Rear Adm. James McNeal said at the event. "It provides us with new opportunities for additional advanced training, but it also allows these Sailors to showcase their creativity and skills in preparing healthy meals and providing outstanding customer service."

The MRV will offer its weekday services at five stops along the air station's increasingly busy flight line. A component of the NRSW and MWR rations-in-kind (RIK) realignment program, the MRV will also allow customers to redeem their RIK allotments as a method of payment.

"A lot of our Sailors and civilians are working hard on the flight line, far away from the base galley or other mealtime options," said Capt. Leif Steinbaugh, commanding officer for NAS Fallon. "This isn't just a quality of life improvement for them; it's a serious morale booster."

Palmer agreed, adding that the flexibility the MRV program brings to working personnel is one of the attributes he thinks will make it most desirable.

"The culinary specialists manning this vehicle will be taking the Navy's nutrition standards and delivering them to the customer, on site, in the most appealing way," said Palmer. "It's a forward-thinking solution and a tremendous win for everybody involved."

The MRV is the result of a six-month collaboration between NRSW, Naval Supply Systems Command enterprise activities, NAS Fallon and Commander, Navy Installations Command.
