For the first time during their 2016 deployment, Sailors aboard aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) participated in a baptismal ceremony in observance of Easter Sunday, March 27.

Three Sailors, Logistics Specialist 1st Class Patrick Knode and Aircrew Survival Equipmentman 2nd Class Andrew Otero, assigned to the "Nightdippers" of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 5, and Aviation Structural Mechanic 2nd Class Angelina Rhines, assigned to the "Fist of the Fleet" of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 25, were baptized on the fantail.

"Baptisms are a sacred tradition for us and to have it done on a carrier makes for a very special occasion," said Lt. Cmdr. Kimberly Cain, one of Truman's Chaplains. "While out at sea we use any resources available to us - like a tub filled with water. In our tradition, we do a full immersion for a baptism - this is when the water covers their entire body and the candidate is completely submersed. It feels good to be able to worship and hold a service on this particular day."

The ceremony began with an invocation, two scripture readings and a hymn sung by the church choir prior to administration of the baptism.

"It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience to be able to do this on deployment and on an aircraft carrier," said Rhines. "At first I was very anxious but I'm so glad I did it and I feel very proud of myself."

The service was held not only to celebrate the baptism, but to recognize Easter Sunday as well.

"Like most holidays, Easter is a day to spend with loved ones and remember what you are thankful for," said Knode. "For Sailors who are feeling a little nostalgic, get together with your shipmates and participate in events we hold on board. We may not be able to do the same things we normally do at home but we make the most of it."

While out at sea, it is important for Sailors to build bonds with one another. Otero said being able to participate in services is another way to feel supported by his shipmates.

"For me, this baptismal was a way of making an official commitment to what I believe in," said Otero. "I wish I was able to share this experience with my family but, I'm glad I was able share it with my fellow shipmates."
