Naval District Washington held a proclamation signing followed by a cookout at the Washington Navy Yard in commemoration of Public Service Recognition Week, May 2.

Celebrated the first week of May since 1985, PSRW is organized annually by the Public Employees Roundtable and its member organizations to honor the men and women who serve our nation as federal, state, county and local government employees.

"I think it is important to celebrate this week because it shows us -- the employees -- that the leadership recognizes the workforce's hard work and achievements," said NDW Lead Financial Management Analyst Alicia Savage.

Throughout the country, mayors, governors, agency leaders, communities and public service organizations participate in PSRW by issuing proclamations; hosting award ceremonies and special tribute events; and delivering messages about the value of public service.

"One of the biggest draws of federal work is the chance to make a positive difference, which workers say is a source of pride," said NDW Comptroller Lead Financial Management Analyst Leonard Carver. "Satisfaction often comes from knowing that they are helping and serving people in their roles as public employees."

In addition to the cookout at the Washington Navy Yard, there are several events scheduled throughout the week in the Washington, D.C., including the 4th annual Public Service 5K Run/Walk, public service appreciation games with D.C. United and the Washington Nationals, and a congressional breakfast to congratulate the finalists for the Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medals.

"Everyone enjoyed being recognized for the work they do and/or services they provide," said Carver. "This type of recognition allows for acknowledgment for the efforts each person puts forward in helping the federal government, [serving] our country and the United States Navy."
