Capt. John McGunnigle, Undersea Warfighting Development Center (UWDC), shared his expertise on applying artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) to acoustics in the undersea domain with NWDC professionals here today.

McGunnigle took the lead on Project Harbinger in August 2018. “My presentation, ‘Doing AI,’ facilitates learning how to create tactical value to the submarine force,” he said. “My responsibilities are part of DoD efforts to ‘field to learn,’ bringing artificial intelligence and machine learning solutions to problems in the defense space.”

Project Harbinger developers proved that the time was right to leverage AI/ML, and McGunnigle was chosen to explore how to apply it to the undersea domain. The project is part of the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence (USD(I)) Project Maven.

McGunnigle is chief of staff and director of the Tactical Analysis Group at Undersea Warfighting Development Center in Groton, Conn. His career accomplishments include completion of two Western Pacific deployments and two Eastern Pacific deployments. His record includes an Inter-Fleet Transfer on the USS NEW YORK CITY (SSN 696), five strategic deterrent patrols, one Follow-on Commander’s Evaluation Test on the USS WYOMING (SSBN 742) and an Under Ice Inter-Fleet Transfer and special operations on USS JIMMY CARTER (SSN 23). In addition, the captain participated in ICEX 2011 at the North Pole, two surge deployments and a Northern Atlantic deployment on USS NEW HAMPSHIRE (SSN 778).

McGunnigle is a native of Boston, Mass, who graduated with distinction from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. He earned a Master of Science degree in Operations Analysis from the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, Calif.
