Security program managers from Deputy Undersecretary of the Navy for Security and Intelligence (formerly DUSN-P) discussed the latest innovations in Department of the Navy security policy with Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) security professionals and their counterparts from Naval Support Activity Mechanicsburg and the U.S. Army War College during a two-day training session March 12-13 in Mechanicsburg.
Additionally, attendees were trained on the new Department of Defense (DOD) - Defense Information System for Security (DISS) that replaces legacy systems being phased out.
“It’s important for all DOD security professionals to be trained on this new system to facilitate and expedite security actions such as access and eligibility applications and determinations,” said NAVSUP Security Director T.J. Moffatt.
The Personnel Security Program Manager at DUSN, Jill Baker, added, “This was a valuable opportunity that fostered training, rapport, collaboration, and the sharing of ideas and information across multiple security disciplines. We [DUSN] truly appreciated the thoughtful discussion and feedback.”
“Consolidating about 30 personnel from various commands at our location is a win-win for a number of reasons,” NAVSUP Command Security Manager Ross Webb said. “Not only does this save taxpayer dollars by decreasing the number of individual trips to Washington, D.C., for training, but it also allows the group to ask questions that can benefit all participants.”
Attendees are now prepared to begin using the DOD DISS application as their primary personnel security information system immediately upon returning to their organizations. They left with up-to-date policy information, and the foundation for building a more comprehensive annual security symposium in the future.
“This event also strengthens cooperative relationships among personnel sharing similar responsibilities and will help the entire NAVSUP Enterprise and our partners improve their security programs,” Moffatt said. “We know our Echelon III commands have some effective security practices in place, and we’re learning from each other, in addition to the new software. We’re truly building a collaborative security community.”
Headquartered in Mechanicsburg, and employing a diverse, worldwide workforce of more than 22,500 military and civilian personnel, NAVSUP's mission is to provide supplies, services, and quality-of-life support to the Navy and joint warfighter.
