Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) recognized Naval Base San Diego (NBSD) for its safety excellence by announcing the base’s selection for the 2018 CNO Shore Safety Award.
“Another great win for the greatest base on the planet,” said Capt. Roy Love, NBSD commanding officer. The annual CNO Shore Safety Awards judge an installation based on the overall quality of their safety program, mishap prevention records and contributions to the Navy’s safety program. The NBSD safety team spearheaded the efforts leading to the CNO award, but could not have achieved such an accomplishment without the compliance and collective efforts of base personnel and its tenant commands.
“The Naval Base San Diego safety team takes an aggressive proactive approach to catching and correcting safety deficiencies and providing training to base personnel, and we couldn’t have won the award without the base's willingness to adhere to safety training and procedures,” said Scott Poston, the NBSD Occupational Safety and Health Installation Program director.
The NBSD safety team is comprised of six dedicated specialists who provide around the clock support to the base and its more than 200 tenant commands. The team provides training policies, promotes a culture of occupational safety and health, and specializes in recognizing and facilitating the correction of unsafe environments and conditions.
Supervisors, command-designated employees, and safety specialists evaluated 350 annual occupational safety and health inspections, unsafe/unhealthful reports, and weekly zone inspections during fiscal year 2018. Base personnel submitted more than 3,614 safety-related consultations via phone calls and emails, demonstrating the active commitment of everyone on NBSD to promoting a safe work environment.
“It is through effective teamwork and constant communication that Naval Base San Diego’s safety team can empower the base’s workforce to work safely while completing their assignments and mission in support of the Fleet,” said Poston. “NBSD remains committed to excellence in safety, always.”
