NAVSUP FLC Bahrain's CPI Exhibition Inspires Culture of Change and Achievement

01 October 2019

From Lt. Britney Steen

NAVSUP FLC Bahrain held a CPI exhibition Sept. 17.

Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Fleet Logistics Center (FLC) Bahrain held its inaugural Continuous Process Improvement (CPI) Exhibition on Sept. 17. The event showcased the Navy’s commitment to process improvement and enhanced efficiency in the workplace.

CPI is the act of seeking out opportunities to improve the way in which employees execute a job or specific task to meet or exceed the customer’s expectations.

The exhibition’s coordinator and command Continuous Process Improvement Champion Jacqueline Adams hopes the event “plants the seed of continuous process improvement across Naval Support Activity (NSA) Bahrain and builds a culture of change by highlighting the improvements achieved by project teams over the course of the past year.” In addition to planning this event and collaborating on CPI projects, Adams teaches CPI through the enabling process of Lean Six Sigma.

Participants and attendees of the event included past Lean Six Sigma students, NAVSUP FLC Bahrain’s workforce, and tenant commands of NSA Bahrain. The CPI Exhibition featured 10 CPI initiatives that encompass a variety of disciplines and levels of complexity. In total, these projects achieved cost avoidance of $671,000 and time savings of 18,000 man hours.

Along with showcasing various CPI projects across NSA Bahrain, the event identified the Best Improvement of the Year for 2019 in three categories: Rapid Improvement Event (RIE), Value Stream Analysis (VSA) and Other Process Improvement (OPI).

The winning projects were improvements to the Electronic Transportation Operations Personal Property Standard System (E-TOPS) for RIE presented by Personal Property Office Transportation Assistant Zahra Husain; the Postal Mail Sorting and Distribution Process Flow for VSA presented by Logistics Specialist Seaman Jaylen Nacional, postal clerk; and Duty Driver Training Standardization for OPI presented by Yeoman First Class Timothy Mitchell, NAVSUP FLC Bahrain executive yeoman.

Adams has trained more than 100 employees in CPI over the past year, helping NAVSUP FLC Bahrain identify and begin work on 14 projects that will be completed in fiscal year 2020.

NAVSUP FLC Bahrain is one of eight FLCs under Commander, NAVSUP. Headquartered in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, and employing a diverse, worldwide workforce of more than 22,500 military and civilian personnel, NAVSUP's mission is to provide supplies, services, and quality-of-life support to the Navy and joint warfighter.
