Naval Facilities Engineering Command Northwest awarded $308 million in federal contracts to U.S. small businesses during the federal government’s fiscal year 2019.
The amount represents more than 76 percent in total contract obligations awarded to small business, far exceeding the command’s goal of 46 percent.
“This success reflects NAVFAC Northwest’s strong culture of seeking maximum practical opportunities for small businesses” NAVFAC Northwest Executive Officer Capt. Edward Miller said. “The NAVFAC Northwest team collaborates early in the Acquisition process to identify and leverage the extensive capabilities of our local small businesses to deliver essential construction, engineering, and facility service support to the Navy throughout the Northwest.”
The $308 million includes contract awards in the following categories, each of which exceeded individual command goals: Small Disadvantaged Business at $212 million, Women Owned Small Business at $29 million, Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business at $96 million and HUB Zone at $58 million (some contract awards could be counted towards multiple types of small business, resulting in the $308 million total).
The NAVFAC Northwest Office of Small Business Programs mission is to promote acquisition opportunities where small business can best support the needs of Sailors and Marines. This is accomplished through awarding small business set-aside contract vehicles and bringing awareness of opportunities to the small business community. Contracts include Small Business, 8(a), HUB Zone, and Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business Multiple Award Construction Contracts and single award Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity contracts.
“With the complexities of today’s acquisition environment, it is more important than ever for Small Business and Government agencies to work together to support the warfighter and improve prime and subcontracting opportunities for all small businesses. NAVFAC Northwest has built a culture of Small Business inclusion to compete in the Federal procurement process,” said NAVFAC Northwest Deputy for Small Business Jim Niles.
