Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) hosted a patient safety and quality forum in the hospital's auditorium Oct. 11.

Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) hosted a patient safety and quality forum in the hospital’s auditorium Oct. 11.

This forum was the first of its kind at NMCSD, and was held so hospital leadership can spark discussions in their work centers about improving patient care.

“We must learn from each other,” said Linda Coleman, NMCSD’s patient safety risk management department head. “The quality of our patient care is what makes our hospital great, and there is always room for improvement.”

Healthcare providers and NMCSD leaders attended the forum, which consisted of guest speakers and a Q&A session.

“[This patient safety and quality forum] is a great opportunity to pause and reflect on how best to ensure world-class patient care,” said Capt. Bradford Smith, NMCSD’s commanding officer. “We all must be engaged and empowered to improve at every level of the organization.”

Improving the already high level of patient care is paramount to NMCSD’s leadership.

“Every day we are mindful, we pay attention to detail, and are committed to safety because it’s the right thing to do for our patients,” said Capt. Juliann Althoff, NMCSD’s chief medical officer.

NMCSD’s mission is to prepare service members to deploy in support of operational forces, deliver high quality healthcare services, and shape the future of military medicine through education, training and research. NMCSD employs more than 6,000 active duty military personnel, civilians and contractors in Southern California to provide patients with world-class care anytime, anywhere.
