U.S. 6th Fleet’s Blue Ridge-class command and control ship USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20) departed Thessaloniki, Greece, Sept. 14, 2018, after a scheduled port visit which enhanced U.S.-Greece relations as the two nations work together to strengthen regional security and stability.

While in Thessaloniki, Mount Whitney Sailors provided tours for both Greek media and VIPs. Later in the week, Mount Whitney hosted a reception for distinguished guests. Among the guests was Geoffrey R. Pyatt, U.S. Ambassador to Greece.

“Mount Whitney enjoyed the hospitality and cultural uniqueness of Thessaloniki,” said Capt. Robert Aguilar, commanding officer of Mount Whitney. “In addition to the excellent liberty, we conducted one of our primary missions by hosting a reception onboard, which brought both American and Greek civilian and military leadership together for an evening of socializing and friendship building. The port of Thessaloniki is excellent, affording outstanding anchorages and abundant liberty venues. I look forward to our next visit here.”

Mount Whitney leadership also met with town officials, including the president of the Thessaloniki port authority, the Harbor Master, the police chief, as well as both the governor and mayor of Thessaloniki. Following the meetings, they continued on to tour the Hellenic Navy submarine Katsonis (S-123) and the Hellenic Navy ship HS Hydra (F-452).

“Both crews provided world class hospitality and professionalism,” said Mount Whitney’s Command Master Chief Andrew Hochgraver. “They gave us an in depth tour of both vessels. We were very thankful for the visit and the opportunity to form new friendships with the crews.”

Strengthening partnerships during the port visit to Thessaloniki built enduring relationships and emphasized our shared commitment to promoting security and stability within the region.

Mount Whitney, forward-deployed to Gaeta, Italy, is conducting naval operations in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations.
