U.S. Troops Participate in Exercise Northern Challenge 2018

U.S. Armed Forces are participating in the annual Iceland-led exercise Northern Challenge 2018 in Kevflavik, Iceland, starting Sept. 17, 2018.

U.S. Armed Forces are participating in the annual Iceland-led exercise Northern Challenge 2018 in Keflavik, Iceland, starting Sept. 17, 2018.

Northern Challenge is an Iceland-hosted multinational explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) and counter-improvised explosive device exercise that aims to improve coordination and interoperability with NATO allies and partners. During the exercise, participants will share tactics, techniques, and procedures to achieve greater interoperability when conducting combined peacekeeping and humanitarian operations while countering global or regional threats to security.

Quick Facts:

This year, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States are scheduled to participate.

U.S. Navy participation in the exercise includes Sailors assigned to EOD teams under Task Group 68.1.

U.S. Air Force participation in the exercise includes Airmen from 786th Civil Engineering Squadron (CES) EOD Team, 48th CES EOD Team and U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa.

U.S. Army participation in the exercise includes Soldiers from 702nd EOD, 720th EOD, and 21st Theater Sustainment Command EOD.

U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied and interagency partners, in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.
